Seeking answers

1,441 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: Friends and Traitors
Location: Trynn's Office

There didn't seem to be much to investigate in the VIP quarters of Relan, he had just been put in there, to stay until they got him to Cardassia.

Tatiana stayed out of the way while the crime scene was being processed. While it was being processed, thoughts came to her mind. She was curious as to why the counselor had done this deed. What drove her to do this.

The warmth of the room, reminded her of a home back in her past, back on Bajor. The home being warmer, due to the Cardassian host having kept it so.

Her eyes drifted downwards to where the knife had been dropped, the spatter of where it landed, then towards where Relan had lain and had been stabbed.

She remarked to Baas, "Do you think that Trynn will give answers as to why she did this?"

Baas was leaning against the bulkhead while the team worked the grid bit by bit as they went over the room. "My gut says no. When I made entry she was just standing there...like in a daze. Something just doesn't feel right about this. I'm hoping the Doc finds something that could indicate some kind of outside influence. We should also go though her quarter after this and her background with a neutron microscope.

"That was strange indeed, it was as if she wasn't quite there." Tatiana responded, "Now though, let's take apart her office and see what we can find. If I remember right, I think that the Captain and Caitlyn were heading to her quarters."

Turning towards Baas. What do you say? Shall we go do so?" Tatiana giving a small but determined smile.

Coming off the wall, "Absolutely. It's going to take the forensic team a while anyway. We should check out her quarters after that."

Tatiana nodded in agreement.

==Trynn's Office==

It was strange being in a counselor's office, and not having been in a consultation. it was also strange to even consider that the woman had gone to attack a guest.

"How long had Trynn been serving on the ship?" Tatiana asked Baas, as she began her search, pulilng out the drawers of the counselor's desk one by one.

Daegan also began searching the opposite side of the space. As he looked, "I've been aboard since. well, before we launched. Then, Captain Gray, had started a thing were each department head would host a dinner...sadly I think mine was both the first and the last."

"That is indeed a sad point, and also sounds lovely. I used to have dinners with my team where I had been assigned to. We each took turns in doing dinners."

While she chatted, Tatiana's fingers ran through the drawers checking for something maybe even a falsebottom. She felt something which didn't quite fit what was normally StarFleet generic desks. A quick press from her finger and the bottom opened up.

"What do we have here?" Tatiana uttered softly, pulling out a thin chip. "We've got something to look at. Hopefully it will uncover things we need to know."

Baas turned at her statement. Seeing the chip. "Just a sec." Modifying his tricoder he disconnected it from the ships network...just in case. "There. Just in case the file on that chip intended to cause computer issues." Handing her the now 'standalone' tricoder so she could read the chip's contents.

"Call me impressed." Tatiana remarked with a smile, as she accepted the tricorder from Baas.

It started scanning the chip but, it wasn't translating as some sort of code started scrolling across the viewscreen. "Oh... intriguing. I get to break a code." she looked around her eyes settling upon a set up of a computer. "lets use this to decipher the code." examining it to make certain it wasn't hard wired to the ship.

Smirking as she took the same precautions with the terminal he had taken with the tricorder. As she began to try and break the the coding he leaned in watching her work.

With the computer prepared, Tatiana set to work. One thing she truly loved to do was to break codes and this was proving to be a challenge, Different combinations she went through, her all time favorites to break codes, Fifteen minutes passed by, then thirty, ten minutes after, that was when she gave out a scoff of triumph.

"Got you!" Tatiana uttered with a huge smile. "Now let me see what has been hidden."

Bringing up the files Tatiana gave out a gasp, as she went through it.

"Oh no!" as she started reading and seeing photos that were there.

There was an image of Trynn, andwhat could be her husband, she was holding a newborn baby, "She had a family..." as she read futher, Tatiana could feel the sting of tears when she came to the last part, Trynn lost her husband, and her child!

She looked over to Baas "Trynn's family was on a civilian transport ship, And the Gul had attacked that ship, and killed her family. Losing her family in one fell swoop it would be enough to drive anyone mad"

"Mad...out for revenge...a bit of both." He hated the idea that was building in his mind but had to ask, nodding at the chip. "Anything other than holos on that chip?"

"I'm not seeing anything else but this doesn't bode well."

Letting what Baas had said sit, Tatiana moved from looking at the information upon the chip to that of the computer itself. She had broken the code, and in turn, she found the key to look further as to what was on the computer.

Files which had a lock, well had been locked before, she clicked on one, it bringing up some interesting data,

"What is this, she was getting close to someone, Commander Babington? In Starfleet intelligence?" Tatiana frowned at this. "We have a connection here, and I don't think it is a good one."

She looked up from the screen, a frown furrowing her brow, "Baas this seems to be a bit more layered than what it seems."

Tatiana rose from the seat, looking around at the office, there had to be something eles here that could give answers to some questions that hadn't been asked, some that she didn't know what could be asked.

Something stood out to her, at first she hadn't noticed it, this was due to her mind concentrating upon opening the chip and breaking into other files.

Lying upon an upper shelf, was something wooden, it had been flat, and she went to investigate. She reached up to grasp hold of it, then paused. Gloves, she needed gloves, of which she found.

Pulling the thing down she discovered a chessboard and lying next to it on their sides were chess pieces.

"Here, grab some gloves lets examine this chessboard." Tatiana turning to look at him.

Grinning he took the pair, looking at them. "Going old school are we?"

"The things that have been done in the past still remain true in our present. And yes, old school. " Tatiana giving a return grin. As she put on the gloves.

Her eyes looked around the office once more then found what she was looking for. A small table folded up against the wall, the perfect size to put a chess board upon it.

Walking over she moved the table, setting it up, for the chessboard and its pieces could be set up.

After snapping the gloves into place he began looking over the chest pieces. They were large ordinary pieces, not that that was out of the ordinary, nothing elaborate. Just basic pieces that could be found in countless chess sets. He picked up piece after piece, finding nothing out of the ordinary with the smaller pawns. Picking up the queen he noticed the felt bottom was slightly out of place. Upon closer examination the piece was hollow, unlike the others which were solid. "I might have something."

A sharp look from Tatiana, when she heard this.

"If the queen was hollow, I am wondering about something else" moving the pieces from off the chessboard, and holding it beneath the desk lamp. A freown then a hmmmnn.

Pressing on a small depression Tatiana slid off part of the board, to where was revealed a hollow space just the right size of a knife. Like the one which Trynn had been holding.

"Okay, it looks like we've found how the items were brought onboard the Thunderbird." Tatiana grimly said.
