Personality & Traits
| Personality Overview | Rynol is generally outgoing and easy to speak with. Having grown up with four brothers, he quickly learned he needed to speak up to have his needs met. He excels at making people feel comfortable and at ease. This trait helps immensely in Sick Bay. Medicine on a starship requires an open mind. This is needed for both for discovering treatments and for respecting personal and cultural requirements. Rynol often reminds himself to try a perspective outside his own. | |
| Strengths & Weaknesses | Rynol is a very compassionate individual. He genuinely tries to help others, both professionally and personally. It’s this compassion that has led him to a successful career and several unsuccessful relationships. His last boyfriend left him because “you need to stop trying to fix me.” Often Rynol doesn’t realize he’s doing it again, until its too late. Rynol takes his physical fitness very seriously. Another boyfriend said, “You can’t bury your feelings in the gym.” Looking at his body, you might think there’s a lot buried there. Doctor Avem avoids physical combat. A phaser or rifle? That's just fine. But kicking and punching? No thank you. | |
| Hobbies & Interests | Board games. Many, many board games. Avem collects from ancient to modern, and from many species. He is always willing to teach a new player, and he probably knows the history of that species' board games. |
Medical History
| Past Injuries | On an away mission, a dissident group detonated an EMP. The pulse disabled Rynol's breathing apparatus. Transport to his starship was impossible and local medical facilities were unable to help. He suffered tracheobronchial injuries from the lack of his native atmosphere. In day to day, it has little effect on his life. But extended cardio activities can cause the damage to flare up. | |
| Known Allergies | None | |
| Preexisting Medical Conditions | All Barzans require breathers outside of their native atmosphere. |
| Personal History | Rynol was born on for what passes for a sunny day on Barza II. With its thick atmosphere, sunny days are rare. The third of five sons, Rynol was used to a loud home, plenty of competition, and fierce loyalty. If you picked a fight with one, you could expect the other four Avem brothers to be right behind. Turolt and Erda did their best to raise their sons to value equity, compassion, with a healthy dose of leadership. Barza II is a resource poor planet. As such, they rely on outside trade. Barzans live and work on many other planets. But the toxic atmosphere keeps most aliens from living there. The Avem family travelled often and Rynol learned to appreciate and even love foreign cultures. It was this exposure that inspired Rynol to apply to Starfleet Academy. At the age of 19, Rynol Avem left Barza and was accepted and entered Starfleet Academy in San Francisco, Earth. School had never been very challenging on Barza. But the Academy was much different. Knowledge was not enough. Instructors at the Academy expected you to excel in application, negotiation, physical fitness, and even ethics. This pushed Rynol in ways he had never considered. With the advice of an influential professor, Rynol studied Exobiology and Anthropology with the goal of graduating and attending an additional four years at Starfleet Medical to become a doctor. |
