Personality & Traits

Personality Overview It is easy to say that Vulcans are cold, calculating, unresponsive. Sylar is in many ways a typical Vulcan, albeit one who, through the years of medical training and study, understands that his role requires more than clinical excellence. Fascinated by the behaviours of other species, he consciously adopts a measured bedside manner. His tone remains calm and deliberate, but he chooses words that minimise distress, offers reassurance when it serves a therapeutic purpose, and respects the emotional context of illness.

Ambitions For Vulcans, the choice of a career is not an expression of desire, but of purpose. Guided by logic and the discipline of Kolinahr, Sylar believes that his career must be the means of serving both personal potential and the needs of the galaxy, and Starfleet.

Personal History From a family of physicians, the Vulcan tradition of logical, disciplined apprenticeship with one's family had but one conclusion. Born in Raal, a province of Vulcan, to two accomplished doctors, the expectation of Sylar was that, after a satisfactory performance in the tough, unyielding Vulcan education system, he would follow his older brother Settek into a medical career. His family regarded his future as both predictable and appropriate.

This plan worked, as most Vulcan childhoods do; Sylar passed every examination, followed Settek into medical training, and but for one lecture, given by a journalist from the Federation News Agency, he would have done precisely what has been laid out from birth.

The reporter "had him" from the introduction. A passionate Deltan, he spoke with eloquence and pride of the Federation's relief efforts in support Bajoran refugees. Sylar was struck by the unacceptable deficiencies in medical provision and logistical support. At a primal level, he felt for them. After careful analysis, Sylar had made his plan. Explaining it as a calculated divergence rather than a rebellion, he briefed his family that the variability and complexity encountered in deep space would provide a broader dataset for medical practice, allowing him to refine his skills across species, environments, and unknown conditions. They accepted without discussion, commenting that his examination results showed an inclination for coping with minimal support and in the most mentally trying of situations. A career in the stars beckoned.

The Academy was both a shock and a miracle. He was not, by dint of a long apprenticeship or monastic study, automatically the cleverest being in the room. The breadth of study and the satisfaction to be gained from a liberating exchange of ideas was eye-opening. And then there was the company. Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations had never, really, meant anything to a Vulcan from Raal, who had apprenticed in Raal, and had only moved from province to go to medical college. He had formed friendships, and was one of the "Fab Four", four highly promising medical officers, who excelled at the their studies and forged a bond that remains to this day.
